One More Day in the Big Easy

We chose to go off the beaten path and explore a private cemetary in the city today. Most are closed due to covid. But the Metairie one was open and even had a service going on - we did not join the service. They had a CD driving tour that highlighted notable residents. Good thing Miss Fit is so old that she has a CD player. Then it was out to Whitney Plantation to get a glimpse into slavery's wrath on an indigo then sugar plantation.
The tombs are above ground here because of the high water table.
Beautiful "crying angel" sculpture inside a mausoleum.
Many of the crypts had stained glass decorations.
A few were Egyptian inspired.Whitney PlantationArtist Woodrow Nash created the many sculptures on the grounds. They represent the slave children at the time of emancipation who had their stories recorded.
Another of Nash's evocative installations. This represented the 1811 German Coast Uprising where slaves revolted around New Orleans plantations before local militias captured and beheaded them. A green anole in the church. He seemed like a ghost from the past and would not stay still for a photo.
Always cool to go into a museum gift shop and they are selling your friend's book. If you haven't already, pick up your copy of the Cooking Gene by Michael Twitty.
